Getting started

  1. Install Mint Age Check from the Shopify App Store. The app home shows a setup checklist.
  2. Turn on the app embed: on the app home click Open theme editor. The theme editor opens with the Age check app embed switched on — click Save. The app home then shows it as on.
  3. Settings: set the minimum age, how long the answer is remembered and what happens after "no". On Pro, choose date of birth mode, ages by country, the products, collections or tags that need the check, and checkout confirmation.
  4. Look: texts, colours, logo and background image are in the app embed's settings in the theme editor, with a live preview. Leave a text empty to use the built-in text in your shopper's language (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese).
  5. Test: open your store in a private browser window. Once you answer, the check is remembered in that window; open a new private window to see it again.

What it is — and isn't

  • A self-declared age check: shoppers confirm they're old enough or type their date of birth. It doesn't verify identity or ID documents, and a shopper can answer untruthfully.
  • It doesn't guarantee compliance with any law. You're responsible for the age rules that apply to your products and the places you sell to; some require stronger checks (for example ID checks on delivery).

How it works

  • Same page for everyone. Your pages are served to every visitor and search engine exactly as before. The check is an overlay added in the browser, so nothing is hidden from crawlers and there's no cloaking.
  • Remembered answer. After a yes, a first-party cookie (mint_age) on the shopper's browser holds only the age confirmed, such as 21, for the number of days you choose (0 to 365; 0 = until the browser closes). A "no" is kept until the shopper closes the tab.
  • Date of birth mode (Pro) works out the age in the shopper's browser — including 29 February birthdays, which count from 1 March in other years — and never sends or stores the date. A shopper who is 25 is remembered as "at least 21" (the highest minimum age you use that they meet), not as 25.
  • Ages by country (Pro) use the country your storefront shows the shopper (your country selector or market), not a location lookup.
  • Chosen products (Pro): the check shows on those product pages (by product, collection or product tag), on chosen collection pages, and on every page while such a product is in the cart.
  • Checkout confirmation (Pro) adds "Mint Age Check checkout confirmation" to Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules. When the cart has age-restricted items and no answer, checkout asks the shopper to go back to the store, answer the check, then check out from the cart. The answer is saved on the order as "Age confirmed: 21+". Buy it now and express buttons on product pages start a separate checkout without the answer, so hide dynamic checkout buttons on product pages if you use this.
  • Accessibility. A native modal dialog: labelled for screen readers, keyboard focus stays inside it, Esc doesn't close it (an answer is required), 48-pixel buttons, reduced motion respected, and no page jump when it opens.

Troubleshooting

  • The check doesn't appear. Check that the app home shows the app embed as on (click Save in the theme editor after switching it on) and that the age check is turned on in the app. If you already answered in that browser it won't ask again: use a new private window, or run MintAgeCheck.reset() in the browser console and reload.
  • It appears in the theme editor on every page. That's the preview, so you can style it; it never remembers answers there. Use Close preview, or turn off "Show the age check while editing" in the app embed settings.
  • "Your store already has the maximum number of checkout rules". Shopify allows 25 checkout rules per store. Remove one you no longer use in Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules, then save again.

Plans

Free: Yes / No check on the whole store with any minimum age. Pro ($2.99 every 30 days, 7-day free trial): date of birth mode, chosen products, collections and tags, ages by country, checkout confirmation and full styling. No limit on visitors on either plan.

Uninstalling

Uninstall from Settings → Apps. Shopify removes the app embed and the checkout rule with the app; nothing was added to your theme's code. Your settings are deleted 48 hours later, so a quick reinstall keeps them.
